Jan Levine’s ‘On the Mend’ report for 2/9/17

A detailed account of the key players out, recovering and returning from injury around the NHL including St. Louis center/winger Robby Fabbri. After scoring 37 points as a rookie last year, Fabbri already had 29 points in 51 games this season before he tore his ACL in Saturday. His injury leaves a large hole in the Blues’ offense and puts more pressure on the top-two lines. Let’s take a look at the other 27 players that make this week’s infirmary list.

INJURY REPORT: February 9, 2017

-Arizona/C Max Domi…hand surgery on 12/13; returned to action last Thursday.

-Buffalo/D Jake McCabe…shoulder injury on 1/20; expected to miss at least another week.

-Colorado/D Tyson Barrie…lower-body injury; out since 1/17; did return to action on 1/31, but after playing in just two games he has out of action again.

-Colorado/G Semyon Varlamov…after dealing with a recurring groin injury the past several seasons, Varlamov underwent hip surgery on 1/26 and will officially miss the rest of the season after being placed on IR this past Saturday.

-Columbus/D David Savard…back spasms; missed six of the Blue Jackets’ last seven games as of 2/7.

-Detroit/C Frans Nielsen…shoulder injury; placed on IR 2/6, but is not expected to miss more than a few games.

-Detroit/G Jimmy Howard…sprained MCL on 12/20; moved to long-term injury reserve list on 1/19; made first AHL conditioning start on Saturday; left Wednesday’s AHL game against Manitoba after feeling a “tweak” in his injured leg, which could set back his return to the parent club.

– Dallas/C Jason Spezza…upper body injury on 2/2; placed on IR and expected to return in 10-14 days.

-Florida/C Aleksander Barkov…undisclosed injury; was on IR since 12/28; returned to action last Friday.

-Florida/LW Jonathan Huberdeau…Achilles injury in preseason; activated last Friday.

-LA/RW Tyler Toffoli…lower-body injury; placed on IR 12/28; returned to action last Friday.

-LA/G Jonathan Quick…groin injury; has been out since season opening contest in San Jose on 10/12; now expected out until early-March.

-MIN/D Jonas Brodin…broke finger on 1/17; looking at extended stint on injured reserve.

-Montreal/C Alex Galchenyuk…knee injury suffered in early-December; activated 1/14, but re-aggravated injury on 1/18; returned to action last Wednesday.

-Montreal/RW Brendan Gallagher…underwent surgery on 1/6 to repair a fractured left hand and was expected to be sidelined for eight weeks, but has been progressing faster than expected and could return soon.

-Nashville/D Roman Josi…undisclosed injury; placed on IR 1/13; returned to action last Friday.

-NY Islanders/D Travis Hamonic…knee injury; out since 1/11; considered week-to-week.

-NY Rangers/C Kevin Hayes…suffered left leg/knee injury on 1/22 and was slated to miss 2-3 weeks, but returned to action Wednesday night.

-Ottawa/G Craig Anderson…still dealing with wife’s illness; in midst of two weeks of conditioning and then possibly a short AHL stint before a return to action.

-Philadelphia/C Travis Konecny…lower body injury on 2/7; will miss the next 4-6 weeks.

-Pittsburgh/LW Carl Hagelin…suffered concussion on 2/4 and is in league protocol.

-Pittsburgh/C Evgeni Malkin…knee injury; placed on IR 1/31; no set timeframe for return, but making progress.

-Pittsburgh/LW Conor Sheary…upper body injury; placed on IR 1/31 and is out 4-6 weeks.

-St. Louis/C Robby Fabbri…tore his ACL on 2/4 is out for the season.

-Tampa Bay/C Steven Stamkos…lateral meniscus tear surgery on 11/16; out at least two additional months or more.

Tampa Bay/RW Ryan Callahan…reoccurring hip injury; placed on IR 1/17; will miss at least four weeks.

-Toronto/D Morgan Rielly…lower-body injury; out since 1/17; activated last Thursday.

-Vancouver/LW Sven Baertschi…left game on 2/7 with a concussion; traveled with team to Columbus for tonight’s game, but uncertain if he will play.
